There are mysterious places that, when the sun goes down, change their faces. Vezio Castle, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking Lake Como, is one of them. Legend has it that Theodolinda, queen of the Lombards in the 6th century, fell madly in love with this place. She had her abode built at the highest point of Vezio, from which she could admire the waters of Lake Como changing color with the seasons.
But fate condemned her to a long wait: her husband, King Autari, fell in battle, and the queen was left alone in her castle, a prisoner of memories and the north wind. It is said that, since then, her spirit has never left Vetius.
Over the centuries, many witnesses have sworn to see the ghost of a woman dressed in white roaming among the towers, her face hidden by a veil. Some claim to have heard her crying in the dungeons, others to have heard her name whispered by the waves of the lake on moonless nights. But no one, not even the most skeptical, has ever been able to fully explain her presence.

The shadows lengthen, and for a moment the silence is filled with a whisper: a distant call, a name lost in time.
She is Theodolinda, say the janitors. The ghost queen who never left her castle. It appears when the veil of night becomes thinner, when the fog mingles with the breath of the lake. It does not frighten – she observes. She moves slowly among the chalk ghosts, brushing past them as if they were her silent subjects.
It is said that sometimes one of those plaster statues just bends its head, as if responding to an invisible greeting. And then, the custodians say, the ghost of Theodolinda smiles again. A faint, melancholy smile that does not inspire fear but compassion. Because behind every legend, behind every apparition, there is a soul that does not want to frighten – but to be remembered.
And on that Halloween night 2025, under the Lake Como moon, even those who do not believe in ghosts find themselves holding their breath. As if, for a moment, they actually see them.
